the time i went to new york

back in november, i took a 3 day trip to new york city. my husband and his business partner (who just happens to be one of our very best friends) were going for work, and his wife and i went with them for fun. it was my first time in new york. my first time away from my kids. my first time leaving my kids with anyone overnight. a trip of firsts.
i was nervous and sad leaving them, but it's good for your marriage to have some time without the kiddos.
we just happened to fly in on the day that it snowed...which was amazingly beautiful and freezing.

time square with my sweetie. yes, my eyes are cold. i couldn't keep them open with the wind.

we southern girls aren't used to the snow.

the view from our hotel room. we stayed at the palace, which was amazing.

on thursday, i ate with this sweet friend. we used to work together at my church. she's a dear and i miss her and was so happy to spend some time with her. she's become all new yorkie with her nose ring and tattoos...i'm thinking i want to steal this tattoo idea. she works with an awesome church plant in the city.

doesn't everyone take a picture with the toy soldier man at fao schwartz.

friday morning, this was view for breakfast. isn't he handsome.

beth and i took our first taxi without our husbands. it was quite an adventure. i'm pretty sure we were scared for our lives in the taxis pretty much the whole time we were there.
they.are.crazy.

we split up for some lovie time.
central park with my love.

walking past these little bridges with the little alleyway underneath reminded me of every new york city based cop/lawyer movie/show i'd ever seen.

we ended up with free passes to the guggenheim. i was ecstatic. i'm an art lover. so, i couldn't wait to feast my eyes on the centuries old masterpieces.
also, we were excited because we love movies, and the international with clive owen has an awesome scene in the guggenheim, and we wanted to see it in person. we're weird, i know.

even the architecture of the building is a work of art.

my first broadway show was a.maz.ing. if you haven't seen wicked, you should. it was excellent.

we also had free passes to the empire state building and decided to go at midnight. why not live it up? who am i kidding, we were exhausted. we felt so old being up this late.

if you ever go, go this late. there were no lines and hardly any people up there. the view is spectacular.

it's really breathtaking.
the freedom tower.

we left saturday mid-morning for the airport, and then waited for our delayed flight.

i decided i have a love/strongly dis-like relationship with the renowned city. it's really amazing. but, i was so overwhelmed by all the people and how fast and loud things are there.
i couldn't believe how quiet my target parking lot was after we got back.
i can't wait to go back. :)

nora//one year birthday party

little miss turned one in october, so this post is really late. but, i had to share some pictures from her birthday party. i decided not to pick a 'theme' to make it easier and 'more affordable,' i.e. 'cheaper,' for us to gather decorations. i just picked a color palette and ran with it. since her room is a mixture of colors, and i still had scrapbook paper left from making decor from her room, i used the same colors.
i also found coordinating scrapbook die-cuts on sale at target months before her birthday. they were perfect!

my cutie pie in her handmade party hat.

i made her invite on the computer...unfortunately, we only have a black and white printer...hence the cut out scraps for the bunting.

welcome sign on our front door.

please excuse this terrible picture. inbetween the words, i used the die-cuts...they were birds and flowers.

clothes pins, wooden rectangles spray painted with chalkboard paint, and magnets equal a cheap party favor.

i found these adorable aqua cloud cupcake liners at tj maxx.
i used my favorite egg-free chocolate cake recipe and this super delicious strawberry frosting recipe to top them off.

we had cupcakes and little miss had her own cake. the bunting was made out of chop-sticks and scrapbook paper.

she was so excited about her cake.
i also can't believe she kept her hat on!

happy birthday, sweet girl!

{nora} one year

today, you are one.
this year has come and gone.
sometimes, i wish i could go back to the day our eyes first met and keep you little forever. how selfish of me to feel that way.
i've loved watching you discover this world.
i wish i could describe the love i felt the first time i held you in my arms, but my words fail me.
you will know someday, lord willing,
when you hold your little one after waiting 9 months to meet.
you are sweet and dainty.
i can already see you are passionate...showing us your temper every once in a while.
you are beautiful.
i've loved getting to know you this year.
i'm so thankful God chose you to be my daughter.
you are a joy and a treasure to our family.

we love you, baby girl.

special thanks to carissa g. photography for taking these amazing pictures of our little love for her first birthday.

parks, pumpkin, peas, and some red hair. {miscellany monday}

hey, howdy, hey!
hope your weekend was spectacular.
linking up with carissa for some miscellany monday.
(she's also doing a giveaway!)

i'm pretty consistent with going to the salon. my hair gets tangly pretty fast if it's not trimmed or dyed about every 6 to 8 weeks. it's my excuse for some me time and it's necessary, right? probably not, but i started getting grays at 20, and i'd prefer not to let them show yet. sometimes i dye it myself with old reliable loreal, and sometimes i like a splurge and get it done professionally.
my last hair appointment was in may, so my hair was hard to put a comb through.

lately i've just been medium brown. i've needed a change, but didn't want to lose length, so a color change it was!
i have a crush on red hair. i mean in love crush. it's beautiful. i always wished i was born a red-head like my dad.
i didn't go all red despite the picture. it does make my whole head look red. i still have my dark hair but with red highlights. super fun. i feel like all i need now is a nose ring.

this boy loves his daddy. and we think it's super cute when he puts on his dad's shoes and tries to walk in them.

we've been having some fun park days, even though it's crazy hot here! we shouldn't be able to call it october if it's 86 degrees out.

baby girl got some new shoes and loves walking in them.

my future fashionista.

who doesn't eat peas as a bedtime snack?

even though it's in the 80's, we still needed some pumpkin goodies to commemorate the coming of fall.
this is one of my new favorite pumpkin muffin recipes.
thank you the pioneer woman.

i altered it a tiny bit because i didn't have ginger, and i wanted to add chocolate chips...because everything's better with chocolate chips. am i right? well maybe not everything, but most things. so, if you want to try the original, follow the link.
otherwise, enjoy.

pumpkin chocolate chip muffins

1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup milk chocolate chips (or whatever chocolate chips you like)

eleven months {nora}

this update is way late. it's now october, and you will be one year in ten days.
i can't believe it. i've blinked and your almost a year!

this month brought a big new thing...you are walking!
you love your new found freedom.
you love playing chase with your brother.
you just want to go and get there fast.
you say mama and dada.
you love giving big slobbery kisses, and we love getting them.
your big brother is your favorite person...i want you to remember that.
you perk up at the sound of his voice over the baby monitors.
you get so excited when you he enters the room.
he makes you laugh and cry.
sometimes, he's the only one you'll give kisses to.
you still only have 2 teeth.
you wave bye-bye and try to say it.
strawberries and bananas are some of your favorite fruits.
you love macaroni and cheese and broccoli and spinach.
you are such a sweet girl.
everyday you are more and more of a joy to watch and love.
we love you!
(please excuse the poor quality photo.
it was taken on my phone and little miss doesn't like to sit still)
