jude's birthday: trip to the aquarium

jude's 1st birthday was on a friday, so the hubs decided to take off work so we could take him to the aquarium.  jude has become super interested in animals, so we thought he'd really enjoy the aquarium...and he did.  he was so excited!  we felt like he was on overload pointing and oohing at all the different sea creatures.  it was a great way to spend his birthday!

12 months...ok, ok, one year!

today, my baby is one.
12 months ago, i remember like it was yesterday.  your daddy and i were getting ready for bed...i laid down, and uh-oh...my water broke!  you weren't due for another 7 days.  i was so nervous...i was shaking as i called the doctor.  on the way to the hospital, we talked about you...wondered what you would look like, what it would be like to hold you, to be parents...so many things we wondered about...
23 hours after my waterbroke, you arrived...at 10:34pm...
i was extremely exhausted, but i'll never forget how i felt when i first saw you...you were the most beautiful miracle i'd ever seen...
daddy said while the nurses were cleaning you up, you were crying... he called your name and you held his finger and stopped crying.
that's his favorite memory from the day of your birth!

when i held you for the first time, it was surreal.
my heart was full.  i never imagined i'd love you so much instantly...you didn't know us, and we didn't know you...but, i loved you as if i'd known you all my life...
we couldn't take our eyes off of you...all we wanted to do was hold you, and hug you, and kiss your sweet face...and now, it's 12 months later...you are one, not a little baby anymore, and all we still want to do is hold you, hug you and kiss your sweet, adorably handsome face!  you will always be my little baby...we are truly blessed by our heavenly Father to have you as our son...we are so thankful that he has entrusted us to take care of you.
happy birthday, jude!
we love you!

monday's miscellany: a review of the past few weeks

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1. dave matthews band
for our anniversary in october, my sweet husband bought us tickets to see dave matthews band in november.  i like dave matthews band! and after seeing them in concert...i like them even more!  they were excellent!  i especially like dave matthews and tim reynolds (an uber talented guitar player) live cds...and thought how awesome it would've been to see tim reynolds playing with dave...and to our surprise...tim reynolds was there! score!  caleb and i had so much fun!

(view from our seats)

(caleb and i at the concert)

2.  christmas time is here...happiness and cheer...
i love christmas...it is absolutely my favorite time of the year!  this christmas will be extra special because it will be jude's 1st christmas...well, technically his 2nd, but last year he was 14 days old...so this year will be totally different.  this is also my first year with a fake tree...every year caleb and i would get a real tree...i love the way they look and smell...but, we thought it'd be better to use a fake tree with our little man who gets into everything now!
(our christmas tree...notice the lack of ornaments at jude's eye level)

3.  jude's birthday
this friday, my little one will be one!
i can't believe it!  we are having a birthday party for him on saturday.  i will post pictures of the decor and the party next week...here's a preview...his invitation.  i let caleb pick the theme...so, my one year old is having a robot party!

4.  anxiety
lately i've had a lot of anxiety, and i've have been clinging to the scriptures...particularly this one:

rejoice in the Lord always; again i will say, rejoice. let your reasonableness be known to everyone. the Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
philippians 4:4-7(esv)

i'm a major worrier...major...and so, as a comfort to myself, when i feel that anxiety taking over, i've just repeated this verse over and over to myself and prayed this verse as my prayer...as a reminder that the Lord has all things in his control.  we live in a fallen world, and there are trials and consequences of sin, but it doesn't matter, the Lord is at hand...
a great thing to remember this christmas as we celebrate Jesus...that He is in control today, just as He was over 2000 years ago when a young mary was told she would be with child and He would be our savior...
the Lord is at hand.

christmas cards

the most wonderful time of the year is quickly approaching.
i'm super excited about christmas this year (and every year really).  christmas is my favorite holiday.  i love everything about it:  the decorated christmas tree in my living room, the smell of cranberries and pine coming from my febreeze noticables, peppermint hot chocolate from starbucks while out last minute gift shopping, wrapping presents, spending time with family, and most importantly, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ!
one of my favorite things about this time of year are the christmas cards.  i like sending them, but i love receiving them!  i get so excited when i check the mail and there are christmas cards from sweet friends and relatives!  i don't have a mantel to display them on, so, i hang them off the side of the bar in our kitchen...where they stay until the day after new years!
this year is extra special!  this will be jude's first christmas that he will actually be able to participate.  (last year he was only 15 days old!)  i'm so excited about our first christmas card as a family.  we will have to take a family picture first, but until we do, i've really enjoyed looking at the cards on shutterfly.  i used shutterfly for jude's birth announcements, and i was so happy with how they turned out!  we will definitely use them for our christmas cards.  the only problem will be picking just one!  they have so many to choose from.  these are a few of the ones i like:

i love how this card keeps Christ the center of Christmas!
it's on cardstock (sustainably forested :) which also makes me happy!).  the announcements were on cardstock, and that's probably what i'll lean towards now.

this card is an actual folded card...which would be great because we could write personal messages in them, or we could write a note about how this year has been for us...jude turns one in december, so it would be a great way to update!

but, i also really like this one...it's classic and simple...i love the red merry christmas across the picture...and, we love black and white photos, and this card would be perfect for one!  (this is very similar to jude's announcements...it's just our style!)

i'm not sure what to do!  time to ask the hubs...and take a family photo!
thanks shutterfly for letting me share about your great cards this season.
attention fellow bloggers...you can get 50 holiday cards for free from shutterfly...check it out:  http://bit.ly/sfly2010!

miscellany monday

1.  a few weeks ago we went to the pumpkin patch, and i just realized i never posted about our trip.  jude really enjoyed it!  the local farm has a petting zoo and a hay ride.  jude loved seeing the animals.  it was a fun family outing!

2.  i just really liked this picture that my husband took of jude.

3.  this is one of our most recent family photos.  daddy loves the colts, so jude is supporting him with football jammies.  i think we need to get him a colts shirt so they can match!

4.  this morning i read the following in morning & evening by charles spurgeon.  they are beautiful words that are a great reminder of what Christ has done for me and for all that believe in Him.  i was only going to post a portion, but the whole thing is so wonderful, i had to post all of it.  i pray that you find meaning in these words today:

“The Lord’s portion is his people.”
Deuteronomy 32:9
"How are they his? By his own sovereign choice. He chose them, and set his love upon them. This he did altogether apart from any goodness in them at the time, or any goodness which he foresaw in them. He had mercy on whom he would have mercy, and ordained a chosen company unto eternal life; thus, therefore, are they his by his unconstrained election.

They are not only his by choice, but by purchase. He has bought and paid for them to the utmost farthing, hence about his title there can be no dispute. Not with corruptible things, as with silver and gold, but with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord’s portion has been fully redeemed. There is no mortgage on his estate; no suits can be raised by opposing claimants, the price was paid in open court, and the Church is the Lord’s freehold forever. See the blood-mark upon all the chosen, invisible to human eye, but known to Christ, for “the Lord knoweth them that are his”; he forgetteth none of those whom he has redeemed from among men; he counts the sheep for whom he laid down his life, and remembers well the Church for which he gave himself.

They are also his by conquest. What a battle he had in us before we would be won! How long he laid siege to our hearts! How often he sent us terms of capitulation! but we barred our gates, and fenced our walls against him. Do we not remember that glorious hour when he carried our hearts by storm? When he placed his cross against the wall, and scaled our ramparts, planting on our strongholds the blood-red flag of his omnipotent mercy? Yes, we are, indeed, the conquered captives of his omnipotent love. Thus chosen, purchased, and subdued, the rights of our divine possessor are inalienable: we rejoice that we never can be our own; and we desire, day by day, to do his will, and to show forth his glory." morning, november 15th

burlap purse

as i said yesterday, i've been reading a lot of i made it myself blogs, and i needed to try out my new sewing machine...so, i decided to attempt to make a purse...but not just any purse...i found this adorable tutorial for a burlap purse over at la maison reid.  i also had some questions, so i emailed sweet nancy over at la maison reid, and she helped me out.
thanks nancy!!
i love the way she made this bag, and i love burlap! so i had to try and make it.  the best part is, it only cost me about $5.00!
and now the moment you've all been waiting for...

easy ribbon and bead necklace

i've been obsessively reading blogs about making this or making that...well, i wanted in on the action, however, i don't really have all of the supplies (or the funds) to do some of the things i wanted to do...so, i went the super cheap route on this easy, pretty little necklace (did i mention it was cheap)...
it only cost me $3.50.

supplies:
ribbon
beads
scissors
lighter

i purchased these red resin beads from ac moore for $2.99 (they were originally $4.99, but i had a coupon...yay)...the ribbon is a silver color (a spool of it was only $.50 at ac moore).
i didn't really take any measurements...i just cut a really really long piece of ribbon...then i cut the ends of the ribbon making a point...i took the lighter and carefully burned the end to make it stiff and to make it so it wouldn't fray...it went through the bead way easier this way...(i did this after trying to push the ribbon through and it kept fraying!)
ok...now we are ready to start the knotting and the beading...
i started in the middle of the ribbon and tied a knot...then i tied 2 more knots on top of the same knot...so, it made a really big knot...then string a bead...then another 3 knots...then a bead...then another 3 knots...then, go the other side and do the same...i alternated between sides to even out the necklace...keep alternating and until you've made the size necklace you want...it should look similar to this...
by the time i got to the end of my beads (and it was the size i wanted it to be), i didn't have enough ribbon to tie it around my neck, so i took two more pieces of ribbon and tied little knots, then cut off the excess of ribbon that was attached to the beads(that was really hard to explain)...see the picture below...
voila! an easy bead and ribbon necklace.  i also burned the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.  to wear, just tie it around your neck...you can wear it longer or shorter...whatever your heart desires!

11 months

oh my...only one month to left of my baby being a baby...
soon he will be a toddler...
a one year old..
are one year olds toddlers?...is he already a toddler?
i'm not sure what age makes him a toddler...
anyways,
jude is now 11 months old!
the past 11 months have flown by like the F15 fighter jet.
life's moving along, and i'm not ready!  i miss my little newborn already!  but, i'm excited to see my little baby grow into a little boy!  i've really enjoyed seeing him discover the world...the smallest blades of grass, birds, tiny stars in the sky!
he's amazing, and i'm amazed when i watch him...amazed at how wonderfully magnificent the LORD has created him, and how everyday i am astonished that He entrusted him to us.
what a beautiful blessing.

10 months

this is a little late!  jude has been 10 months now for 15 days!  my little baby doesn't really look like a little baby anymore...i think it's because of his dark hair and eyebrows, but people are so surprised when i tell them how old he is.
he's growing up so fast.  i wish i could slow down time!
we are now walking with the help of a push toy, but crawling is still our main means of transportation. we are slowly starting to eat more solid foods (foods that aren't mashed)...he has a terrible gag-reflex, so this has been very slow!  but, we love blueberry bagels, bananas, green beans, string cheese and the rolls at jim-n-nicks!  we love bath time, and we still love nap time! yay!  we are still taking 2 naps a day!  we are super excited when we hear the door when daddy comes home from work.  i think that's his favorite time of day!  mommy's favorite time of day is bedtime, when i can hold and sing to him.  he doesn't really like to be rocked, but for a few moments we cuddle with our blanket and i sing to him...he looks up at me and smiles, talks back to me, and sometimes laughs at mommy's singing!  it's ok if he laughs at me...that's my special time when he's still my little baby and time goes by slowly for us in that moment!

5 years ago, we said "i do"
i do to "i love you" and "i love you more"
i do to your sweet kisses in the morning while i lay in bed and you leave to go support our family
i do to arguments over dishes in the sink and clothes on the floor
i do to making up
i do to dirty diapers and smelling like spit up
i do to sleepless nights with no covers because i stole them
i do to never watching a movie alone
i do to best friends forever

i am truly a blessed woman and thank our Father for giving me you,
my husband
my leader
my lover
my friend.

"let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!  for your love is better than wine..."  Song of Solomon 1:2
